The Food & Drug Administration and DSHEA
As required by the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994, I must state clearly that:
FDA approval and oversight of these products
It should also be noted that none of the products on this website have been given FDA approval. That, in itself, should be no cause for concern. The products found here are not drugs, and are not intended as substitutes for approved medications. They are sold as dietary supplements or cosmetics. As such, they do not fall under the regulatory reach of the FDA, as would some medication.
So, the mere fact that the FDA has not approved the information or products on this website is not really an issue. Any such concern is something of a straw man. It doesn't apply here. However, that does not mean that the FDA does not provide fairly rigorous overesight of what is offered here. Products or product ingredients that are deemed unsafe are not allowed for sale; and no disease claims are permitted.
So, the lack of FDA approval here means nothing, related to safety of these products. Though not approved, as such, we would not be permitted to offer them if they were not safe.
FDA approval is not an assurance of safety (and, by implication, that something not approved is somehow suspect)
It should be noted that any concern that these products are not FDA-approved is rooted in the mistaken idea that they are equivalent to medications, intended to treat, cure or prevent diseases. They are not.
That concern is also based on the idea that FDA-approved medications are, by the fact of their being "approved", safe and effective. Sadly, quite often, that is not the case.
FDA-approved medications, taken as prescribed by doctors, are the third-leading cause of death in the United States. According to some sources, they are the leading cause of death, killing more people every year than cancer or heart disease. These FDA-approved medications, and the FDA-evaluated statements that go with them, are also responsible for about 40% of all hospital occupancy and the untold misery of millions.
But again, the whole "approved" / "not approved" issue does not actually apply to the products on this website.
